Time to Re-Focus

Been thinking about my business and where I want to go with it. I like crafting things, but it’s very time consuming which means I can’t do the digital stuff as much as I would like – designing and marketing it. As I can put one design on tons of products that way, I’m thinking that I should primarily focus my energy on the digital stuff. Not saying that I’m going to give up the crafted items, but it will be more of a side hobby I think vs. a full on business. The digital designs are more versatile too – once it’s done, I can scale them up or down for many more things – like the coin purses, bags, t-shirts and fabric. I’m just worried that I’m kinda turning into ‘jack of all trades, master of none’ if you know what I mean. My time is limited and I can either market a bunch of aspects thinly or focus more aggressively on one aspect to market. To be effective in marketing, you can’t really half a** it.

I’ve noticed that many online shop sites say that to be successful, you need to have a large variety/inventory. Since I started focusing on trying to build up the Art Fire shop, my digital art output and updating of new products in Zazzle and Cafe Press has dropped. By the time I get home from an average work day, I have about 4-5 hours (depending on how much sleep I want to get) to work on Kimchi Kawaii. I’ve also noticed that sales have dipped in both those shops and interaction on here has also declined. Both those shops are very good money makers for me and keep growing. I need to focus on increasing their sales. I’ve been trying to approach the Art Fire shop with the attitude of keeping it packed to the gills with EVERYTHING which means A LOT of crafting. At the same time, I’ve been trying to keep the CP and Zazzle shops equally packed. There are also so many other crafting brands out there that are much more established who have the time to keep up with it. With my schedule, that’s just not physically possible.

Don’t worry, I won’t be giving up my hand crafted stuff. I would still like to increase my con attendance too to get exposure for Kimchi Kawaii. I just won’t be worrying that I don’t have like 20 varieties of the fake cupcakes available with like 5 each. I’ll put stuff in there as I have time or what doesn’t sell at cons.

Speaking of cupcakes – I uploaded the new smaller ones with the new pastry tip to my Frosted Fleur de Lis deviantART account. I really like the small ones with the new tip. They look a lot more like real cupcakes. I’m thinking of either phasing the large, domed ones out or at least really cutting back on production. They are a multistep process to create. What do you guys think?

Can You Hear the Bells?

It’s spring time and that means that it’s also the time that people start thinking about weddings, or at least planning for them for summer. I’ve been very busy working on updating the shops, but I figured that I should get at least ONE wedding related design in there. Of course, I had to take it from a foodie/cupcake lover standpoint. I’ve had this sketch in my sketchbook for about a year now. Did it up last night and have put it in both shops.

Cafe Press – shirts, mugs, buttons, cards, etc.

Zazzle – mostly the same as Cafe Press EXCEPT in this shop, there are ‘save the date’ cards and for a fun twist, magnets. These can be customized with text related to the date and names of the bride and groom.
(The Zazzle link will take you to my Greeting Card section where the two items I mentioned are located. For more, non-stationary type items with this design, go to the ‘Cupcakes’ section in the shop).

Sweet Dreams

When I was working on the latest batch of fake cupcakes, I started daydreaming. It’s easy to do since I don’t have to think really hard about what I’m doing with them. One time, I was taking a batch to a friend. Since I don’t have a car, I rely a lot on public transportation and so that day was on the train with this tray of 12 cupcakes. This one couple who shared the table with me were commenting on them and one said that they were like a ‘3D Thiebaud’. For those of you who don’t know, Wayne Thiebaud is an American painter associated with the Pop art movement. One of the things he’s known for is painting desserts like cakes and pies. If you are interested in reading more about this artist, check out this link to Wikipedia.

Anyway, I love his art. If you ever get to see them in person, you will probably notice that he likes to build up thick layers of paint to add texture and on the ones of desserts, it just reminds me of frosting and I so badly want to touch it. So for someone to say that my cupcakes were like Thiebauds was definitely a compliment to me! A coworker suggested I try to see if the Crocker Art Gallery in Sacramento will sell them in the gift shop since they have a lot of Thiebaud themed things there (he’s from this area). I haven’t had a chance to look into it yet, but I when I was daydreaming the other day, I went on this little fantasy where he found them and really liked them and then told me so in an email or something. Ah yes, I do seem to have my head in the clouds a lot of the time. Maybe its the fumes from the spackle that I use for frosting….

More of My Cupcakes :)

I was really happy with the new batch of cupcakes. I used to make fake roses out of Sculpey and had this one laying around from that project. It was my first and probably last time trying to sell art on consignment. It just wasn’t working out for me to make any money off of since I had to put the price so low so that the shop could get THEIR profit and didn’t make the retail price so high no one would buy them. Very frustrating to say the least. Anyway, this one never got turned into a full flower and it’s been rolling around in my craft box for a few years now. Now that I’m doing the fake cupcakes, I thought that this could possibly work as a good topper. I think I’ll make more of these flower ones in the future and maybe price them a bit more since they definitely take more work.

Very Good Day

Tuesday was a pretty good day! Got word that my acrylic charms have shipped and should be here in 2-5 business days. I am so excited about that. It’s kind of like an early Christmas present for me :).  Also found out that my layout is good for the stickers I want to get. I can’t get them until January due to keeping with a New Year’s resolution to not use credit cards in 2010. Would be kind of stupid to blow it now with only 16 days left of this year! But man, I can’t wait to order my first set of stickers to sell. Meanwhile, I’ll work on more layouts for them.

Came home and jumped back on my productivity wave for another ride. Did up some more of the fake cupcakes and printed out some stuff for a Christmas present I’m making for a friend. I’m hoping that the cupcakes will be dry and ready for ‘frosting’ by the weekend.

Am listening to the Nutcracker Suite right now. Every time I hear it, I keep thinking how I want to do anime style drawings or chibis of the characters. The ones on the Candy Land would be especially fun! Maybe for next year…

No Guilt Cupcakes

I admit, I love cupcakes and I love how they are all over the place right now. Yes, they are trendy, but I still get happy whenever I see them. I don’t like what they do to my waistline though. Why is it that everything that tastes so good is so bad for you? ARGH!

Anyway, one year for my birthday, a friend gave me a fake cupcake. I like to do crafty things and thought that this would be a fun thing to try out. I did some searching online and one tutorial mentioned using expanding foam. I gave it a try and it was an epic fail. I’m not sure how they did it, but my cupcakes did not look like what I wanted them to look like. They started out promising, but since I lack a magic wand to stop them at that perfect cupcake shape, they over expanded into cream colored domes. They looked like Chinese steamed pork buns. I drew some faces on them and friends said that they looked totally cute as pork buns, but I didn’t want pork buns! Some how, kawaii pork buns doesn’t have the same ring as kawaii cupcakes. It was back to the internet….

More searching and I came across this wonderful tutorial on Sugar and Meringue on making them using plaster, styrofoam, paper clay and spackle. This version definitely has more steps and materials involved, but I finally had success! I am excited to make more.
